Heading into nature and sleeping outdoors for a night sounds appealing, but wild camping and bushcraft are bound by rules in the Netherlands. Before you pack your backpack it is good to know what is and is not allowed, so you risk no fine and respect nature. In this article we lay out the rules level headedly and look at what to bring for a responsible night outdoors.

Wild camping: in principle not allowed
Pitching your tent freely wherever you want, meaning wild camping, is not allowed in most nature areas in the Netherlands. The country is densely populated and much nature is protected or managed, so simply spending the night is forbidden. Anyone who does it anyway risks a fine and disturbs vulnerable nature.
That does not mean a night outdoors is impossible. There are legal alternatives that come close to the free feeling.
Legal alternatives
- Pole camping: at designated spots in forests and nature areas you may camp by a pole, often free, for one or two nights with a small tent. The rules differ per location.
- Nature campsites: small scale, basic sites in the middle of nature that approach the outdoor feeling with minimal facilities.
- Bivouac zones: in some areas zones are designated where overnight stays are allowed under conditions.
Bushcraft: practising skill within the rules
Bushcraft skills such as making fire, working wood or building a shelter are not allowed everywhere. Fire is forbidden in many nature areas due to fire risk, and cutting or damaging trees and shrubs is usually not allowed. So practise on your own land, in places where it is explicitly allowed, or at a bushcraft location set up for it.
